Surprisingly sophisticated and a tremendous acting achievement. I think this program should be shown to every generation of high school and college students and then discussed extensively. Event though it deal with many of the things covered in The Prince it puts them in contemporary trappings so that they're easier to see for what they are.

Hi there,

You know I thought this film was by Miyazaki since its one of the films in my Miyazaki DVD collection set. But it turns out it's actually by Isao Takahata. I found this out after publishing and corrected the post. That must be why it still says miyazaki in the URL. Thanks for pointing it out. I'll see if I can fix it manually.

I guess Todd's pointing out some of the interesting things that Jung worked on for those who aren't familiar.

"the real universe is within us, and what is experienced outwardly
is secondary." Jung....

Over 50 years ago, Dr. Carl Jung, (psychologist) and Professor W. Pauli, Nobel laureate, physics, concluded that an acausal connecting principle is at work in the universe. Basically when two or more unrelated events come together with a common meaning, which, at times, can be interpreted. (synchronicity).

This is especially true when number symbolism appears, since both agreed that number is the most primal archetype, (first form) of order in the human mind.

I don't think you have to believe in Mesmer's theories to appreciate the depth of Alan Rickman's performance in this film. Personally, I spent countless viewings just trying to sort out Mesmer's relationship with his blind patient (as beautifully played by Rickman and Amanda Ooms) and whether he truly loved her or merely regarded her as his greatest accomplishment.
